So I saw a post on how American Apparel markets unisex clothing, but I couldn’t actually find a unisex section on their website. I did however notice this. The sweatshirts one is particularly illuminating.

Selling men’s clothes to men, and selling women’s bodies to… ?

I’m glad that there are other people who got more out of the story than I did, I really am. I thought it was trying too hard to be artistic and just ended up being a jumble of plots that didn’t fit together in the way they were intended to, I think. But if other people see more than that, that’s great for them.

But it was racist.

I guess you weren’t paying that much attention but they did fit together but I suppose that’s your opinion as is the opinion it was racist. I personally didn’t see it as so but that’s because I was caught up in what was a very compelling story line with good art and fabulous filmography.

I was paying attention, I saw how the stories fit together, and I still don’t think the point (that your actions affect the future) was worth making. Like, yes, our actions affect the future. Sometimes in big ways and sometimes in small ways. But I don’t need a three-hour movie to tell me that. Like, the future is a result of our actions. That’s just how time works. I guess the movie was making that point but it’s not like it’s a revolutionary concept, but it felt like the movie was trying to make this grand point that no one would realise if they hadn’t seen it (or read the book). It seemed really pretentious, I guess.

I will give you the filmography, that was impressive and I enjoyed that part of it.

But it’s not my opinion that the way this movie was cast is racist. Yellow-face is racist. Brown-face is racist. There was no black-face in the movie (that I can recall) but that would be racist too. That is fact, not opinion. I’m not saying you can’t still like the movie while acknowledging its problematic aspects, but if you just ignore or excuse the oppression that happens through media like this you are perpetuating it.

Besides, the stories would have fit together without casting the same actors in all of the plots.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. Cloud Atlas did have a point it was six stories intertwining into a much larger narrative that was subtle. It was a story about everlasting love, how small things affect the larger picture, and to be honest it was just artistic. Sure it’s not the easiest to follow but there was a point to it.

And I don’t think.. that was racist?? It was just playing with the reincarnation theme and reincarnation isn’t really linear it just sort of happens.

They could have found a more creative way to indicate that these were the same people being reincarnated that didn’t involve being racist.

And the part near the end in the far-future timeline where Tom Hanks points out where Earth is in the sky? Unless they found another very Earth-like planet in our solar system, there’s no way they’d be able to see Earth with the naked eye. Which is not nearly as annoying as the yellow-face, obviously, but it still bothers me.

I feel like this whole movie was just like “LOOK HOW DEEP THIS IS LET ME BASH IT INTO YOUR SKULL FOR THREE HOURS AND YOU HAVE TO THINK THIS IS DEEP OR EVERYONE WILL THINK YOU’RE STUPID” but like, it actually wasn’t that deep? I mean, yeah, your actions now affect the future. But, yes? I knew that? Thanks?

I completely agree. I am just really tired of people excusing the yellow face practiced in the movie. Especially when they go on about how Halle Berry and Doona Bae also played outside their race and gender. That’s total bullshit. It’s not only derailing, but it’s also evident of how little these people actually understand what racism is.

Yellow/black/brown face and whitewashing is inarguably racist.

It also bugs me that people think that having more actors would have made the movie choppy. It wouldn’t be the case if the writers did their jobs really well and all of the actors were competent. I think it would have been more impressive.

you should read the book Cloud Atlas; you might like it better than the movie. I found the book to be very good.
