I wanted the professor to stand up and tell us what I’m sure he knew: That the word “homosexual” didn’t appear in the Bible until the year 1958… that the Book of Leviticus is speaking of temple prostitution… that the words in the New Testament which have been translated to read “homosexual” mostly stem from a Greek word with no English equivalent… that Bible printers intentionally sell weak translations to the public because they fear backlash from conservative fundamentalists… I wanted my professor to just tell us that our generation is doing it again… I wanted him to tell the class that Christianity is doing to gays what it has done to women and various “otherly” groups for centuries… That we haven’t learned much from past Bible-centered mistakes like the Crusades, or the trial of Galileo, or slavery…

Pastor Sean Harris preaches to his congregation, “The second you see your son dropping that limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch… and when your daughter starts acting too butch, you rein her in.” This is a man who claims to preach the word of God.

What!!?!! The saddest part of this is the reaction from the congregation.

TRIGGER WARNING: extreme homophobia, transphobia, general hate

Wow. This guy is so full of anger and hate. And here I was thinking that “They will know we are Christians by our love.”

So…

My mom just told me that she’d be less happy for me if I was marrying a woman instead of a man.

Thanks, mom.

I obviously am extremely aware of my straight privilege here, but I still feel really hurt by this. I’m trying to let her know why this is so hurtful (not just to me, but also to everyone who is actually LGBTQ) but she’s all “love the sinner hate the sin” and I think that’s complete bullshit. You can’t love someone but hate part of them. It doesn’t work that way.

We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male passenger made a pass at him.

The lightbulb went off. “Oh,” I said. “I get it. See, you are afraid, because for the first time in your life you have found yourself a victim of unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you.” The boy nodded and shuddered visibly.

“But,” I continued. “As a woman, you learn to live with that from the time you are fourteen, and it never stops. We live with that fear every day of our lives. Every man walking through the parking garage the same time you are is either just a harmless stranger or a potential rapist. Every time.”

The girls in the room nodded, agreeing. The boys seemed genuinely shocked.

“So think about that the next time you hit on a girl. Maybe, like you in the taxi, she doesn’t actually want you to.”

100 Real Tweets from Homophobes Who Would Murder Their Gay Child

stfuconservatives:

(trigger warning for homophobia)

So I guess #ToMyUnbornChild was a trending topic recently. Ugh. To make matters worse, at least 100 terrible people answered the question “What if the fetus you save is gay?” with “I would straight-up murder them, of course!” Chances these same people consider themselves pro-life? Close to 100%, I’d imagine.

-Jess

This is so unbelievably disturbing.

I’ve been forced to explain homosexuality to my kids (aged 3 and 4) because their uncle is gay. This incredibly difficult and traumatic experience went as follows:

Child: Why does Uncle Bob go everywhere with Pete?
Me: Because they’re in love, just like Mummy and Daddy are.
Child: Oh. Can I have a biscuit?

We’re all scarred for life. Scarred, I tell you.
